The Suns are flying up and down again, but that hasn't fully solved their identity crisis.
Offseason Moves
The Suns entered the offseason a team in transition, but one that still seems a bit confused about its identity. On the one hand, they were heartened at how well the offense performed even without Stoudemire over the final 29 games, and hoped to maintain that approach heading into this season. On the other hand, they're a veteran team that missed the playoffs and had to cut salary to better manage their luxury tax situation -- a position they've been in each of the past three seasons thanks to some extremely poor salary-cap management.
Rumors persisted for much of the summer that the Suns would trade Stoudemire as well, but even if they wished to it doesn't seem remotely possible until he demonstrates his retina has healed. However, they remain nearly $5 million over the luxury tax threshold and have until February to get under it. Trading Stoudemire seems the most obvious way out of their pickle, but unloading Richardson or Barbosa would also put them under the line.
Drafted Earl Clark, Taylor Griffin and Emir Preldzic.
The Suns tabbed Clark in the middle of the first round as a combo forward who can thrive in their up-tempo game. He's drawn comparisons to Lamar Odom for his length and ballhandling skill, but also for his weak motor and tendency to disappear. Obviously if he turns out like Odom the Suns will be ecstatic, but his offensive numbers at Louisville weren't overwhelming.
Second-round pick Griffin is a hustling role player who likely will spend some time in the D-League, while Preldzic is a low-grade European prospect who will stay overseas and develop.
Traded Shaquille O'Neal to Cleveland for Ben Wallace and Sasha Pavlovic; bought out Wallace and Pavlovic.
Phoenix hit the reset button on the O'Neal trade, as the acquisition and subsequent buyouts of Wallace and Pavlovic put it right back where it was before the trade in terms of the salary cap. It was vitally important to make this deal to limit the Suns' luxury tax exposure, especially since Wallace agreed to extremely favorable terms on his buyout.
Let Matt Barnes leave, signed Channing Frye for two years, $3.8 million.
It's a bit of a surprise that the Suns signed any free agents, as Frye and Grant Hill put them back into the luxury tax, but the Suns needed some bodies to fill out the roster. Frye will fit in well, too -- he's a floor-spacing big man who has functioned best as an undersized center, and that's his likely role in Phoenix. It will only be for one year if he plays well, as he can opt out after the season.
Re-signed Grant Hill for two years, $6 million.
Score one for the training staff, as the oft-injured Hill opted to return to the team that kept him remarkably healthy the past two seasons. He signed for less money than others offered and should provide great value at this price, but like Frye, he can opt out after a year if he wishes.
Signed Steve Nash to a two-year, $20 million extension.
Nothing signals the Suns' confusion about their identity more than this deal. Phoenix could have let Nash play out the season, become an unrestricted free agent, and then let the chips fall where they may in the free-agent market. Given that he'll be 35 next summer and the Suns appear to be rebuilding, this didn't seem like such a bad idea.
Instead, Phoenix took on some major risk by extending him through 2012; on a positive note, it did preserve the asset for a trade if it wants to pursue that option somewhere down the line.
Biggest Strength: Perimeter Offense
With Gentry recommitting the Suns to their "seven seconds or less" attack, Phoenix should once again drive defenses batty with quick hits in transition and half-court pick-and-rolls. Nash will remain the focal point, as he complements deft passing with one of the best outside shots in league history and has kept himself in remarkably good shape.
He has plenty of company in the form of Richardson and Barbosa. Richardson didn't mesh with Porter's system, but he should thrive under Gentry -- he's a devastating transition finisher and a very good 3-point shooter off the catch. Barbosa, meanwhile, is among the fastest players in the league and takes the tempo up another notch whenever he's in the game. Gentry made heavy use of a Nash-Barbosa-Richardson look in which all three guards took the court simultaneously, setting the scoreboard spinning like a pinwheel.
With the accomplishments of those three, it's easy to forget about elder statesman Hill, but he's a strong offensive performer too. As with Nash, he's aged remarkably well and remains a strong transition player, and while he doesn't shoot with the aplomb of his perimeter cohorts, he excels at attacking off the dribble to set up others.
Biggest Weakness: Interior Defense
The Suns will score in bunches, and may very well lead the league in offensive efficiency for a sixth straight season. But it remains to be seen how they propose to stop anybody. Of the four perimeter stars mentioned above, only Hill is a good defender, putting pressure on the frontcourt to make up for their deficiencies by turning away drivers at the rim.
Unfortunately, nobody seems qualified for that particular job. Stoudemire is strictly an offensive performer who has never shown much inclination for defense, especially if he has any kind of foul trouble. Frye is soft and easily overpowered by bigger centers, while Lopez offers more promise defending the post but struggled in other respects as a rookie. About the only hope comes from bench energizer Louis Amundson, a limited and undersized banger who plays with tremendous zeal. Rookie Clark could also provide some answers, although he may play more minutes at the 3 than he does in the frontcourt.
Outlook
The Suns don't seem totally sure whether they're coming or going, re-signing veterans Nash and Hill with one hand while cutting salary and importing kids on the other. While they're trying to regain the glory of the D'Antoni era, that train has probably left the station -- Kerr made too many personnel moves in a misguided effort to turn the Suns into the Spurs to be able turn the engine around just by pushing one button.
Additionally, Stoudemire's output this season is far from guaranteed. Retina injuries are tricky business, especially in a sport like basketball in which depth perception is so important. The fact he went in for an unscheduled follow-up procedure this summer says his recovery may not be as smooth as hoped.
Even with Stoudemire playing at his former phenomenal level, the Suns will be hard-pressed to get back to the postseason. The key players are getting up in years, the depth has been strip-mined, and they may cut more salary to get under the tax threshold. Ultimately they may squeak into the playoffs anyway, but if so it will be because the bar in the West has been lowered, not because their own play has been raised.
Prediction: 40-42, 2nd place in Pacific Division, 8th in Western Conference.

| Pareil ! Le match d'hier pourrait même être révélateur de la saison à venir. Ces 2 équipes ne feront certainement pas les P.O et OKC pourrait bien finir avec un meilleur bilan que Phoenix. |

Hier soir ils ont commencé le match avec 3 PF de métier dans le 5: Amaré, Frye et Taylor.
Je ne vois pas comment ils pourraient se qualifier pour les PO cette année encore... |

| Ca va être sa 6ème année de suite à Phoenix, à 35ans. Contrat de 2ans, je le vois bien finir sa carrière là-bas (voire même de resigner encore à Phoenix à la fin des deux années). |

Le centre des Suns Amaré Stoudemire a affiché un message sur sa page Twitter vendredi révélant qu’il a besoin une intervention chirurgicale de plus sur son œil.
" Breaking News ! Fans vous l’entendez en premier de ma part Amar’e. Je vais subir une intervention chirurgicale pour terminer la réparation de mon oeil," a écrit Stoudemire sur sa page.
Il a subi une intervention chirurgicale fin février pour réparer une rétine partiellement détachée dans son oeil droit et il a manqué le reste de la saison 2008-09.

Pour la première fois depuis la draft, et l’annonce de son possible transfert à Golden State, Amare Stoudemire est sorti de son silence.
Pas de rumeurs. Pas de source anonyme. Pas de “il paraît que…”
Cette fois-ci, dans l’Arizona Republic, c’est Stoudemire qui parle, et il s’exprime sur les Suns.
Son genou va mieux. Il s’est bien remis de son opération à l’oeil, et il évoque son avenir, plus motivé que jamais.

“Je prolongerai dans une équipe qui a un avenir. Aujourd’hui, la balle est au centre du terrain. C’est aux deux camps de tenter de se rapprocher.Il faut trouver un accord qui soit bon pour les deux camps.”

Nash a depuis 2 ans et surtout l'année dernière bien baissé de niveau
sa non participation au ASG (en plus de la concurrence monstrueuse au poste 1-2 à l'ouest) était justifiée

Sans dec, je vois mal le Shaq s'enterrer à Cleveland pendant toute une saison, il va déprimer... Ça me rappelle Wilt Chamberlain qui jouait à Philly mais habitait NY (même si Philly n'est pas un trou comme Cleveland) |

J'étais juste étonné que, si il ne s'entendait réellement pas avec Nash et que ce fut la cause du trade, il n'ait pas réagi ouvertement.
Bref, dans les cas précédents, il attaquait l'autre joueur, la rien. Donc, est ce qu'il y avait vraiment un probleme avec "Hair Nashy"... |

Info à préciser mais y'a une ressemblance avec un certain duo du passé
Même si là, ça a l'air d'être limité à l'aspect technique (ralentissement du jeu par le Shaq qui n'est plus tout jeune pour une équipe qui a raté les playoffs) alors qu'à l'époque, c'était surtout un problème d'égo entre les 2 starlettes à leur apogée. |

Mais le jeu des Suns est loin d'être ce qu'il était il y a quelques années, avec ou sans Shaq. Nash essaie de rester aussi important que par le passé, mais déja à l'époque il avait échoué collectivement et là c'est très peu probable que les Suns réussissent quelque chose. Je pense pas car le jeu des Suns est clairement différent de celui des Cavs ! Bien que les Suns c'est plus ce que c'était ...
J'avais posté cette histoire cette nuit mais je n'y crois pas trop ... Déjà Nash ses plus belles années sont derrière lui et il y a clairement une politique de reconstruction qui est en marche pour les Suns alors la prolongation de Nash n'est plus une priorité à mon sens ...
D'ailleurs j'annonce que si le trade de Stood aux Warrioris se fait, Nash fera ses valises dès cet été et pas de son plein gré je pense !!! |

On appelle ça du chantage et si c’est vrai, ce n’est clairement pas très joli (”NBA is business…”). Selon le site NBA Fanhouse, qui cite un dirigeant (anonyme) de la Ligue, c’est Steve Nash qui aurait poussé Steve Kerr à transférer Shaquille O’Neal.
Le meneur des Suns et son GM se sont rencontrés à New York pour discuter prolongation de contrat et voici ce qui se serait dit ce jour-là.
“Nash a fait comprendre à Kerr que tant que O’Neal serait là, il ne prolongerait pas et qu’il serait plutôt déterminé à partir”.
Ce serait pour cette raison que Kerr aurait finalement accepté de transférer le Shaq aux Cavs, quitte à recevoir des broutilles en échange. Pour Nash, la présence du Shaq était néfaste aux Suns. Il ralentissait le jeu et tout le rendement de l’équipe s’en ressentait.
Peut-être que LeBron James fera le même constat dans quelques mois…

Les Suns se spécialisent dans la draft des "frères de", après Robin Lopez l'an dernier, voici Taylor Griffin qui débarque!
La difference entre les 2 Griffin est encore plus importante que celle entre les frères Lopez...
Sinon, ils ont chopé au 1er tour Earl Clark et ça c'est plutot une bonne nouvelle s'ils arrivent à le gérer |

| Brooks a fait des playoffs de feu mais pas sur que ce soit un si bon meneur surtout en titulaire... Donc pas une mauvaise affaire surtout que Barbosa arrive en mem tps ... Reste a trouver un meneur titulaire et les Rocks seront difficile a jouer... |

De toutes façons les Suns sont partis pour la reconstruction alors... Par contre, attention à Landry, même s'il n'est peut être pas aussi bon en titulaire, en back-up il m'avait agréablement surpris face aux Lakers !
Côté Rockets, le duo Stoud-Yao est incroyable, par contre à l'arrière c'est le désert s'il lâche Brooks !  |
