LIONEL HOLLINS (1976-1980)

Position : Guard ▪ Height : 6-3 ▪ Weight : 185 lbs.
Born : October 19, 1953 in Ark City, Kansas
High School : Rancho in Las Vegas, Nevada
College : Arizona State University
Draft : Portland Trail Blazers, 1st round (6th pick, 6th overall), 1975 NBA Draft
NBA Debut : November 7, 1975

When thinking about his time with the Trail Blazers, during which he was a starting guard on the 1977 championship team, there are two things Lionel Hollins would like to take back. His jersey from the the clinching game of the 1977 NBA Finals, and the trade that sent him from Portland to Philadelphia in 1980.

"After we won the championship, I remember walking out of the arena and somebody had my jersey" Hollins said. "The thing is, I never remember even taking it off. But there were so many people in the locker room. It was just chaos."

The quickness and savvy of Hollins were key factors in the Blazers' championship run, but by the start of the 1979 season, Hollins became disgruntled about his contract. By February 1980, the Blazers traded him to Philadelphia for cash and a future draft pick that ended up being Kelvin Ransey. Today, he wishes he would have never left.

"Looking back at it, my Portland years were my best" said Hollins, who is now coaching the resurgent Memphis Grizzlies. "After I got traded, my role changed, and I went to a team that played more one-on-one. We didn't have the cohesiveness of the Portland teams. In Portland, we maximized our abilities every night we went out on the court. I don't think we did that in Philly."

Hollins' speed jump-started Portland's fast break, as he provided a moving target for the outlet pass of Bill Walton or Maurice Lucas. And his quickness in the halfcourt was another moving part to Jack Ramsay's motion offense.

During the Blazers' playoff run to the title, he led the team in scoring three times, including 31 points in a Game 2 win at the Lakers in the Western Conference Finals, and 25 points in a Game 4 win against Philadelphia in the NBA Finals.

"His nickname was 'Train', but he was a bullet train/i>" said Mychal Thompson, who played two seasons with Hollins. "He was a complete player : could pass, defend and score."

On top of it all, Hollins had a penchant for hitting big shots. Especially, it seemed, if it the Blazers were playing Chicago.

In the 1978 season, Hollins twice beat the Bulls in heartbreaking fashion, including playing a key role in what is widely considered the best Blazers comeback ever.
Trailing the Bulls by four points at Memorial Coliseum, Portland scored with 16 seconds left to cut the lead to two and set the stage for Hollins. After a timeout, Chicago inbounded at halfcourt, where Hall of Famer Norm Van Lier inbounded. Hollins stepped in front of his pass and raced down the court for a dunk to tie the game with seven seconds left. After another inbound at halfcourt, Bobby Gross tipped Van Lier's pass to Dave Twardzik, who fed Hollins for a game-winning layin with two seconds left.

"Besides winning the championship, that game versus Chicago when we came back and won, that is my best memory" Hollins said.

One month later, Chicago thought it exacted revenge at old Chicago Stadium. Leading by one in the final seconds, Blazers guard Johnny Davis had his shot blocked from behind, and the Bulls quickly executed a fast break to go up one with four seconds left. That's when Hollins took an inbounds pass from Corky Calhoun at halfcourt, dribbled three times and took an off-balance shot over the defense of Van Lier. From 30-feet away, it banked in at the buzzer.

"There were 22,000 people in there, and they were so loud in the timeout that we couldn't hear the play from Jack Ramsay. He had to write the play on the floor in chalk" Hollins said. "But when I hit that shot off the glass to win it ... it just went silent." (Jason Quick, oregonlive.com)

BOB GROSS (1976-1982)

Position : Forward-Guard ▪ Height : 6-6 ▪ Weight : 200 lbs.
Born : August 3, 1953 in San Pedro, California
High School : Fermin Lausen in San Pedro, California
College : California State University, Long Beach
Draft : Portland Trail Blazers, 2nd round (7th pick, 25th overall), 1975 NBA Draft
NBA Debut : October 28, 1975

Bobby Gross became entrenched in Trail Blazers lore for his play during the 1977 playoff run to the NBA title. "He was the grease, the guy who made it all work," Bill Walton said. "Maurice (Lucas) was the key, and our other players were good, but Bobby ... without him we wouldn't have won it."
A small forward who was in constant motion, Gross saved his best for the NBA Finals, leading the Blazers in scoring for the final two victories in Game 5 and Game 6. In Game 5, he scored 25 points on 10-of-13 shooting to go along with five assists and three steals. In the clinching Game 6, Gross had 24 points, making 12-of-16 shots.
It capped an impressive playoff run for Gross, who went against noted backcourt players Scott May of Chicago, David Thompson of Denver, Cazzie Russell of the Lakers and Julius Erving of the 76ers. Gross held all the players, except Erving, below their season averages while increasing his scoring from 11.4 in the regular season to 14.1 in the playoffs. He also averaged 5.9 rebounds and 4.2 assists in the postseason.

"Look at the record books, they don't lie," Walton said. "He went head-to-head with some greats and outplayed them all."

Gross was known for his activity on the court, be it on the fast-break, back-door cuts or using screens to run his defender ragged around the court. Walton said one reason Gross ran so much was because coach Jack Ramsay never stopped yelling at him.

"Ramsay was a big board guy – he loved writing things on the board before each game," Walton said. "The board would change every game, except for one thing : Across the top it said RUN, RUN, RUN and he would come in and say 'I want relentless, tenacious running until the other team quits!' Then he would turn around, look at Bobby and say, 'That means YOU!' "

Gross' running was essential to creating proper space to make Ramsay's motion offense work.

"Other players like Pete Marovich, Magic Johnson and Larry Bird created space with the ball," Walton said. "But Bobby Gross created space without the ball, by running. To do it without the ball is absolutely incredible."

Troubled by aching knees, Gross left the Blazers in 1982 and played 27 games with San Diego before retiring at age 30. He lives in Portland and works for Lorentz Bruun Construction Co. in its restoration division. He did not return phone messages for this story. (Jason Quick, oregonlive.com)

BILL WALTON (1975-1978)

Position : Center ▪ Height : 6-11 ▪ Weight : 210 lbs.
Born : November 5, 1952 in La Mesa, California
High School : Helix in La Mesa, California
College : University of California, Los Angeles
Draft : Portland Trail Blazers, 1st round (1st pick, 1st overall), 1974 NBA Draft
NBA Debut : October 18, 1974

On leaving college, Walton was drafted by the San Diego Conquistadors of the American Basketball Association and also taken as the number one overall by the Portland Trail Blazers in the 1974 NBA Draft and was hailed as the savior of the Portland franchise. He signed with the Trail Blazers but his first two seasons were marred by injury (at different times he broke his nose, foot, wrist and leg) and the Blazers missed the playoffs both years. It was not until the 1976–77 season that he was healthy enough to play 65 games and, spurred by new head coach Jack Ramsay, the Trail Blazers became the Cinderella team of the NBA. Walton led the NBA in both rebounds per game and blocked shots per game that season, and he was selected to the NBA All-Star Game, but did not participate due to an injury. Walton was named to the NBA's First All-Defensive Team and the All-NBA Second Team for his regular season accomplishments. In the postseason, Walton led Portland to a sweep of the Los Angeles Lakers in the conference finals (arguably holding his own against Kareem Abdul-Jabbar during the series) and went on to help the Trail Blazers to the NBA title over the favored Philadelphia 76ers despite losing the first two games of the series. Walton was named the Finals MVP.
The following year, the Blazers won 50 of their first 60 games before Walton suffered a broken foot in what turned out to be the first in a string of foot and ankle injuries that cut short his career. He nonetheless won the league MVP that season (1978) and the Sporting News NBA MVP, as well. He played in his only All-Star Game in 1978 and was named to both the NBA's First All-Defensive Team and the All-NBA First Team. Walton returned to action for the playoffs, but was reinjured in the second game of a series against the Seattle SuperSonics. Without Walton to lead them, Portland lost the series to Seattle in six games. As it turned out, Walton would never play for the Trail Blazers again. During the offseason, Walton demanded to be traded, citing unethical and incompetent treatment of his and other players' injuries by the Blazers' front office. He did not get his wish and sat out the 1978–79 season in protest, signing with the San Diego Clippers when he became a free agent in 1979. (Wikipedia)

SIDNEY WICKS (1972-1976)

Position : Forward-Center ▪ Height : 6-8 ▪ Weight : 225 lbs.
Born : September 19, 1949 in Los Angeles, California
High School : Hamilton in Los Angeles, California
College : University of California, Los Angeles
Draft : Portland Trail Blazers, 1st round (2nd pick, 2nd overall), 1971 NBA Draft
NBA Debut : October 15, 1971

Coming out of UCLA in 1971, Sidney Wicks was taken with the second overall pick and he lived up to that great lineage of John Wooden-coached players. Immediately making his impact felt, Wicks was named not only Rookie of the Year in 1972 but an All-Star as well during his rookie campaign. One of the first true all-around players for the Trail Blazers, Wicks was a candidate to rack up a triple-double on any given night. Throughout his career, he led the Blazers in scoring and rebounding three out of five seasons (’72, ’75, ’76), assists twice (’73, ’74) and free throw attempts and makes every season in Rip City.

Standing 6-9, Sidney was an undersized power forward but he used his great strength, length and basketball IQ to have his way with the defense in the paint, which is where he did most of his damage. To this day, he holds the single-game record for rebounds with 27 and his six 20 point-20 rebound games trail only Bill Walton for most in franchise history. Wicks may have played 35+ years ago but his accomplishments still rank among the best in Trail Blazers history as he is fifth all-time in rebounds (4,086), free throws made (1,878), ninth in points (8,882), field goals made(3,502) and tenth in assists (1,647). GEOFF PETRIE (1971-1976)

Position : Guard ▪ Height : 6-4 ▪ Weight : 190 lbs.
Born : April 17, 1948 in Darby, Pennsylvania
High School : Springfield in Springfield, Pennsylvania
College : Princeton University
Draft : Portland Trail Blazers, 1st round (8th pick, 8th overall), 1970 NBA Draft
NBA Debut : October 16, 1970

At 6'4" he could play either guard or forward positions and was a long range shooter in an era devoid of the three-point line. He played in two All-Star games and in 1971, the Blazers' first year in existence, was named co-Rookie of the Year with the Boston Celtics' Dave Cowens after averaging 24.8 points per game. Until Damon Stoudamire's 54 point performance in 2005, Petrie held the Blazers' individual scoring record for one game at 51 — a feat he accomplished twice. His jersey number, 45, was retired by the Blazers. Following the 1975-76 NBA season he was traded to the Atlanta Hawks in a transaction that landed Portland Maurice Lucas. Petrie did not play any games for the Hawks after suffering a career-ending knee injury. (Wikipedia)

Trail Blazers Top 40 countdown : Portland's greatest players (oregonlive.com - octobre 2009)

As the Blazers prepared to start their 40th season, The Oregonian asked the question: Who were the best Blazers ever?

In conjunction with the Blazers' season-long celebration of their heritage, we picked the Top 40 players in franchise history. Some selections were easy. Some had been forgotten. And some were hotly debated. But in the end, the names that helped shape this franchise found their way onto the list.

To help with the list, The Oregonian tapped Bill Schonely, the team's radio voice from 1970-1998 and a team ambassador for the past six seasons; Chuck Charnquist, the team's historian and archivist; Wayne Thompson, The Oregonian beat writer for the first three seasons who has been associated with every Blazers season either as a writer or statistician for the team; Ken Wheeler, who covered the championship season and the early 1980s for the Oregon Journal, as well as current Oregonian beat writers Jason Quick and Joe Freeman.

The criteria were vague, although the aim was to pick the 40 best players in team history, not the 40 most popular. Statistics and awards were weighed heavily, as were roles played on winning teams. Bad character was not held against players, but good character was taken into account. Also, players were judged only on their time in a Blazers uniform.
