BIG TICKET FOR 18TH @ BOSTON !!!

Kevin Garnett is staying with the Celtics. The Herald has learned this morning that Garnett has informed the club he will be back. The 36-year-old considered retirement, but ultimately decided to return for an 18th NBA season — and more. Boston Herald

Marc J. Spears: Celtics to re-sign forward Kevin Garnett to a three-year, $34 million deal, sources tell Yahoo! Sports. Twitter

According to an NBA source and a source close to Garnett, the sides are working out the details of a deal that will be for at least two years and could possibly include a third. “The decision came down to whether KG wanted to keep playing,” said one source. “And once he decided that he did, it was going to be Boston. He wasn’t going to leave Doc (River) and those guys and play anywhere else.” Boston Herald

Is Today Decision Day For Kevin Garnett?
by Jeff Clark on Jun 30, 2012 5:37 AM PDT

Still up in the air.

Kevin Garnett reportedly told Danny Ainge that he would make a decision on retirement vs. playing this year by today. In fact, he s one of the few free agents that Ainge can talk money with right away.

Green Street " Danny Ainge on Kevin Garnett: "Don t really have any conclusions"
The Celtics have an exclusive negotiating window with Garnett through the end of June; free agents can start negotiating with other teams on July 1, with a moratorium on signings from July 1-10. "I ve been talking with Kevin and his people and don t really have any conclusions yet," Ainge said after Thursday night s NBA draft. "That s our No. 1 option. One reason is because he s such a valuable player, and one reason is because he s the only guy we can talk to."

Hopefully KG can give Ainge a yes answer and the two can work out the parameters of a reasonable deal that will allow Ainge some room under the cap to sign some of our own free agents and any others we might be interested in.

A league source confirmed yesterday that Duke’s Austin Rivers, taken by New Orleans with the 10th pick, was indeed targeted by the Celtics during their failed attempt to move up the board Thursday night. But Doc Rivers’ son wasn’t alone. The Celtics had targeted “four or five guys” who went in the lottery, including North Carolina’s Harrison Barnes, who was taken by Golden State at No. 7. The Celtics had worked out Barnes and Washington’s Terrence Ross, the eighth pick of the draft by Toronto, during the Eastern Conference finals in Miami. Boston Herald

The Celtics made a qualifying offer today to Greg Stiemsma of just over $1 million, thus retaining their right to match any offer for the restricted free agent center. Boston Herald
Though the Celtics added a big young body to their scheme with the drafting Thursday night of Syracuse’s Fab Melo with the 22nd pick, Stiemsma remains an intriguing young player. Though foul prone, and hindered towards the end of the season by plantar fasciitis in his left foot, the seven-footer showed enough to keep the Celtics interested.
---
As of this afternoon the Celtics were still negotiating with undrafted free agents to fill out the roster for their summer league team, which will play in leagues in Orlando and Las Vegas starting next weekend.
---
But several veteran free agents were added today, including power forward Othello Hunter, who played last season in China, and Jamar Smith, an NBADL veteran guard who played on a Celtics summer league team two years ago. Free agent guards Dionte Christmas and Jonathan Gibson have also signed on.
Sean Williams, the former Boston College center who was signed near the end of the season with the idea of playing for the Celtics this summer, will also be on the roster, though it’s unclear whether he will play in both Orlando and Las Vegas.

He’s been largely out of sight, but Jeff Green hasn’t been out of the Celtics’ mind — and the affection has been returned. So tomorrow, the two sides will officially begin the task of getting Green back in green. Boston Herald

“He’s doing great,” said his agent, David Falk. “He’s been cleared 100 percent and he’s healthy. “Obviously the Celtics want him back, and we’ll talk about that on July 1,” he added, referring to the date on which clubs can begin negotiating with free agents. Boston Herald

Asked if he thought there would be a problem getting a deal done with the Celtics, Falk said, “No. I mean, I think he’s going to have a lot of interest by a lot of different teams, but I’ve made no bones about the fact he feels a special kinship with Doc (Rivers) and the Celtic tradition — but they’re going to have to step up and make a deal with us.” Boston Herald

He especially thinks Fab Melo for the Cs is one of the best fits in the draft.
Best Fit
• Fab Melo -- No one is saying the 22-year old Melo is ready to play right away. But his defense and shot blocking skills are undeniable and with a little work and by adding a little bulk to his 7-foot, 255-pound frame, Melo has starting center potential. And for the Celtics, which shifted Kevin Garnett to center the second half of last season, that's a position they badly needed to fill."

Celtics Select Kris Joseph With The 51st Pick
by Jeff Clark on Jun 28, 2012 8:29 PM PDT

Peekaboo.

Kris Joseph - Fab Melo's teammate from Syracuse. Sounds like he's a good athlete who can shoot spot up jumpers and play a little defense.

Kris Joseph | NBADraft.net
Kris seems to be a quintessential swingman small forward ... He's a great athlete, with tremendous leaping abilities ... He is always active, always trying to make something happen around the basket whether its getting tips or put backs ... He's an above average rebounder mainly due to his explosiveness, high energy and constant motor- always following shots and trying to make something happen around the basket ... His long wingspan and athleticism give him potential to be good defender

The knocks on him appear to be largely on offense. Not a good shooter off the dribble, not a good ball handler, etc.

Is it just me or does this sound like a younger Mickael Pietrus? It does sound like he can run with Rondo at least.

#21 Celtics Select Jared Sullinger of Ohio State
by Jeff Clark on Jun 28, 2012 6:34 PM PDT

He was once a top 5 pick but red flags on his health made him slide down the board to the Celtics.

I'm a big fan of this pick. Yes, the back is an issue but if watched carefully he could be a huge talent.

BostonHerald.com - Blogs: Celtics Insider» Blog Archive » Celtics take Ohio State PF Jared Sullinger with the 21st pick
The skilled big man averaged 17.6 points and 9.3 rebounds last season as a sophomore, but plummeted down draft boards he was tagged with a medical red flag by NBA doctors regarding his back.

Green Street » NBA Draft’s Potential Celtics: Ohio State PF Jared Sullinger
Sullinger is slightly undersized as an NBA post player but should be able to use his strength and length to have success at the next level. He not only is a very good rebounder but a good finesse shooter in the paint, which makes him the type of forward who can record double-doubles consistently in the NBA.

#22 Celtics Select Fab Melo of Syracuse
by Jeff Clark on Jun 28, 2012 6:41 PM PDT

He's a seven footer that isn't a great rebounder but ...did I mention that he's a seven footer?

The knocks on him are pretty clear. (via Behind the Basket)
He's a huge shot blocker with great size (7-feet-0, 255 lbs). Melo can make the few shots he takes (57% FG). Concerns: terrible rebounder, extremely raw non-factor on offensive sets, conditioning/legal/academic/attitude issues, very low hoops IQ, gets in foul trouble

All in all, I'm not much of a fan of this pick but I'm going to try to be optimistic. So here's the better news from Draft Express:
Melo's ability to be active and physical has helped him on the glass as well. Though Syracuse still struggles on the defensive boards as a unit at times, Melo remains a capable area rebounder and has become a more significant factor on the offensive glass thanks to his improved motor. Lacking a natural feel for the game and usually being more focused on taking charges or chasing blocked shots in Syracuse's zone, Melo is not a very prolific defensive rebounder, though he does have soft hands and is improving his fundamentals. It will be interesting to see how much he can improve on this skill once outside of Syracuse's zone, as he simply isn't always in position to make a play here.

Rumor: Celtics Interested In Jared Cunningham
by Jeff Clark on Jun 27, 2012 6:11 PM PDT

An interesting rumor from Andy Katz today regarding a player that might be a target for the Celtics, though not likely with the 21 or 22 picks.

News and notes from the NBA draft - ESPN
Jared Cunningham has become a coveted player at the back end of the first round to early second. The former Oregon State guard shut down his workouts but was in Atlanta for an interview Tuesday. Atlanta, Charlotte and Golden State have a lot of interest. But so too does Boston and the Celtics even have interest in acquiring an third first-round pick to possibly get Cunningham.

What's the scouting report on Cunningham? Glad you asked.

Green Street " NBA Draft’s Potential Celtics: Oregon State SG Jared Cunningham
Cunningham, who declared for the draft after his junior season, is a phenomenal athlete with a smooth, impressive game. He’s a decent slasher with solid ball-handling skills and uses his leaping ability to finish off highlight-reel plays. There’s potential for him to become a solid spot-up shooter and he also has the tendency to score off tip-ins on offensive rebounds. Cunningham’s defense is impressive. He can shut down both the guard positions and he uses his extremely active hands to jump passes.

Sounds like another Avery Bradley, so either we're trying to corner the market on guys like that or perhaps Cunningham might be a plan-B kind of guy if we have to use Bradley in a trade. He's at least someone to keep an eye on as the first round wraps up and the 2nd round gets under way.

Rumor: Celtics Interested In Trading For Jamal Crawford
by Jeff Clark on Jun 26, 2012 7:51 PM PDT

Instant offense?

The Celtics could always use scoring punch off the bench and Jamal Crawford can score in bunches. So I suppose this latest rumor makes some deal of sense.

76ers, T-Wolves, Celtics interested in Jamal Crawford
The Portland Trail Blazers are fielding trade offers for guard Jamal Crawford and the Philadelphia 76ers, Minnesota Timberwolves, and Boston Celtics are among the teams actively pursuing the scoring specialist intensely, a league source tells CSNNW.com.

However, for those unfamiliar with his game, here's the catch.

Summer Romance: Interest in Crawford? - Boston Celtics Blog - ESPN Boston
Crawford has never been lauded for his efforts on the defensive end, and he's a very poor rebounder on top of that. What's more concerning is the drop-off in Crawford's shooting percentages last year. While he might have shot a career-high 92.7 percent from the free throw line, he shot a career-worst 30.8 percent from 3-point nation, and just 38.4 percent from the field overall, his worst mark since his rookie season back in 2000.

Plus there's the matter of what we'd have to give up to get Crawford. On the other hand, he's got just one year left on his contract ($5M) so picking him up would maintain that all important cap flexibility for Danny Ainge. So we'll see how serious the interest is.

In other news, 2 actual trades happened in the league today.

Trading up en prévision ? Quid des décisions de KG et Ray ? Rondo dans les rumeurs (over my dead body !!!) ? Mystery as usual ^^...

Let's not put #Celtics G Ray Allen in a Heat uniform just yet. Source says he, “hasn’t made any decisions yet as to where he’s playing.”
