Alvin Gentry will take over Monday as the Suns' interim head coach, replacing first-year coach Terry Porter, multiple team sources confirmed Sunday.
Porter is losing his job after the Suns won six of 16 games and finished 28-23 before the All-Star break. In June, Porter had signed a three-year contract, which sources said Sunday was guaranteed through the third season, contrary to previous reports. His annual salary was in the $2 million range.
Porter has been informed of the change, but as of late Sunday night had not commented.
Gentry, 54, joined the Suns as an assistant coach at the outset of the franchise's turnaround in 2004, upon Steve Nash's arrival. He was the only coaching staff holdover from the Mike D'Antoni staff and is expected to return the Suns to their previous seasons' style, a change that had been under way offensively since December. It will remain to be seen if this team is able to pull off the run-and-gun system.
Today's afternoon practice will mark the start of Gentry's third stint as an interim head coach and his fourth turn as a head coach in the NBA, where he has coached for 20 years. Previously, Gentry was a midseason replacement for Kevin Loughery in Miami and Doug Collins in Detroit. Including Gentry's work as the Los Angeles Clippers coach, he has an overall record of 177-226, but he has coached less-talented teams than these Suns, who currently are a ninth-place disappointment in the Western Conference.
Most Suns players are in favor of the change, with the others being closer to indifferent than against the move. When the team was blown out at Golden State on Feb. 4, it was Gentry who blew his lid on the players in the locker room after the game. Five days later, after another blowout loss in Philadelphia, several players said they felt like Porter quit on them when he pulled Steve Nash, Shaquille O'Neal and Grant Hill for good in the third quarter.
