It looks like there isn't a lot of substance to that speculation that the Celtics may be adding a point guard from among the NBA's current flotsam and jetsam. Per Danny Ainge:

Keyon Dooling's retirement may have caught many off guard, but the Celtics had a decent idea that he was leaning in that direction. Dooling's absence opens the door for one or more of their young players to make the roster during training camp and team president Danny Ainge said the team isn't looking to bring in another veteran.
"We probably won't bring anyone else in," Ainge said. "We like our young guys. We like Kris Joseph and Dionte Christmas and Jamar Smith and they'll be competing for that last spot."
Currently, Joseph's deal is fully guaranteed, while Smith has a $25,000 guarantee, and Christmas has $236,802 of his rookie minimum deal guaranteed.
The Celtics currently have two open roster spots, so the team could keep two of the three mentioned players if it chose. It's interesting, then, that Danny talked about competing for that "last spot".
- Does that imply that we'll be bringing in another veteran, and only one spot will remain?
- Or that the team intends on only carrying 14 players until players are bought out later in the season?
- Or did Danny just awkwardly phrase what he was saying? |
