Warriors’ Stephen Curry Has Realistic Shot at 3-Point Record
If Warriors point guard Stephen Curry hits 46 3-pointers over the Warriors’ last 11 games, he’ll set the NBA record for 3-pointers in a season.
That’s a lot of 3-pointers left to make. But with the way Curry is shooting it, making about four long balls per game the rest of the way is hardly unreasonable.
Back in November, Curry was trying to come up with a way to link his on-court performance to his contribution to the Nothing But Nets campaign, which distributes insecticide-treated mosquito nets to protect families in Africa from malaria.
He considered linking it to his assists, or even Warriors wins. In the end, he decided to donate three nets for every 3-pointer he makes.
“I’m not a dunker, obviously,” Curry said. “I wanted to do something that people could hopefully rally around. Three-pointers, that’s a strength of mine, and I’ve got to do what I do best.”
After making 6 of 10 on Saturday, Curry is up to 224 made 3-pointers. That’s 672 nets, and counting.
Curry has totaled 41 3-pointers his last 11 games. He made 48 3-pointers during an 11-game stretch bridging December and January.
Of course, if his latest ankle sprain keeps him out of action, that would be a blow to his chances of setting the record, set by Ray Allen in the 2005-06 season. Curry rolled his right ankle midway through the fourth quarter of Saturday’s win over Washington. X-rays were negative and he will receive treatment Sunday and Monday before determining if he can play in Monday’s tilt vs. the Lakers.
Through Saturday, Curry leads the NBA in 3-pointes made (by 37 over New Orleans Ryan Anderson) and 3-pointers attempted (by six over Anderson). He’s tied with Atlanta’s Kyle Korver for highest 3-point percentage (45.8) for those who have taken at least 100 3-pointers.
Curry is also closing in on the record for most 3-pointers made by a Warrior. He’s at 596 (he passed Chris Mullin in Saturday’s win). Jason Richardson holds the franchise record with 700, which Curry figures to pass early next season, his fifth year in the league.
Curry said his confidence has grown throughout the season, especially as his off-the-dribble 3-pointer has fallen with consistency. He said it doesn’t feel like he’s hoisting a lot of 3-pointers and didn’t know he was in reach for the league record.
“There were two games where it felt like I’d taken a lot,” Curry said. “The one against Oklahoma City when I missed (what felt like) six on one possession, and the New York game.”
