Linsanity Comes To Boston on ABC (Knicks vs. Celtics)
by Jeff Clark on Mar 4, 2012 10:00 AM EST

- The last time the Celtics and Knicks played, Boston won by 2 points.
- Jeremy Lin played just 6 minutes and scored only 2 points.
- The Celtics were 12-10 and the Knicks were 8-15.

The next game, Linsanity began when Lin led the Knicks to a win over the Nets. Basically a lot has changed since then (even though it has only been about a month).

Right now, there are some interesting similarities between the two teams. Both have younger point guards that are arguably the best players on their teams despite playing with higher profile and pedigreed teammates. There are some questions about how their game fits with those teammates but when everything is clicking it is hard to stop them. Both teams are hovering at the .500 mark but have the potential to climb higher in the standings (or drop off as well). Both teams may just be fatally flawed, but the Heat and Bulls would not find either one to be an easy out in the first round (and an upset is not out of the question).

Matchup to Watch: I don't know, pick one:

Rondo vs. Lin should be a lot of fun and will get the most attention.
Pierce vs. Carmelo seldom disappoints (last time they played was basically a shootout between the two).
Garnett vs. Chandler works because Tyson is essentially a poor man's (and younger) KG

Injury Watch:

Ray Allen (sick) missed practice but will likely play.
Avery Bradley (ankle) was listed by Doc as doubtful, but says he wants to play.

KG on playing center: 'I don't like it'
Mar 3 5:00 PM ET By Chris Forsberg

BOSTON -- Even before Jermaine O'Neal aggravated a left wrist injury before the All-Star break, Celtics coach Doc Rivers had decided to insert Brandon Bass into the starting lineup. That meant shuffling Kevin Garnett -- somewhat begrudgingly, at least from the player's perspective -- to the center position in the new-look starting 5.

And while Garnett has thrived over the last three games, averaging 21 points and 9.3 rebounds per game since coming out of the All-Star break, he fully admits he's less-than-thrilled with the idea of playing the center role. Even still, he's willing to do anything that helps this team win games.

Preference-wise, I don’t like it, to be honest with you," said Garnett. "I’m a 4. I don’t like, you know -- it's what it is. I’ll be whatever this team needs me to be. Other than a cheerleader with pom-poms and some short-shorts. Other than that, whatever this team needs me to be, man, I’ll be it.

"I have a lot of confidence in myself when it comes to playing basketball, and positions are just numbers to me. But if it comes to preference, I enjoy the 4. There’s a lot more versatility in the 4. The 5 you’re kind of stuck in mud and cement and you know things are written -- there's not a lot of variation in the 5 position. But this is what it is, and I’m enjoying it and I’m adapting and doing whatever I can to give my team an edge."

As Garnett bottom-lined it, "Doc, he's the captain, so whatever he says goes."

Rivers knows the idea of being classified a center irks Garnett, maybe more so than actually being there on the floor. But Rivers really likes the advantages he's seen so far, particularly when Garnett has been paired with Bass to start games.

"First of all, [Garnett is] so smart defensively, [opposing centers] will be bigger, but they have to be awful smart to score on him," said Rivers. "He’s so crafty. Secondly, I think his speed now, he’s the quicker person, where at 4, there’s a lot of 4s as quick or quicker. Now all of a sudden, he’s the fastest 5, so that’s a big advantage for us, especially in our pick-and-rolll game, which, if you’ve noticed since they break, we’re running far more of it. Because when he pops and rolls, that’s a 5 trying to get back to him, they can’t catch him. Then with Brandon being able to space the floor on the opposite side, it really stretches the floor for us."

Rivers admits he hasn't tweaked the language of Boston's playbook, so a lot of calls still reference Garnett at the 4 position, maybe helping to mask the fact that he's playing the 5.

"I don’t even think he calls it center; I never say it," said Rivers. "It’s funny, I have our plays, they [still identify Garnett as the 4], not for any mental reason. He knows he’s at 5, but I don’t think he looks at it as being a center."

Rivers admitted his lone concern is trying to figure out how opposing teams will match up with Boston's frontcourt on a game-to-game basis.

"You’re not sure who's going to guard who at the 5 and the 4 each night," said Rivers. "With us, defensively, we like to know who wer’e going to guard, but we don’t like cross-matchups. That’s the only thing that's been a little tricky. But other than that, it’s been pretty good."

Cousy: Trading Rondo would be a mistake
Mar 3 12:36PM ET By Chris Forsberg

Bob Cousy doesn't like the idea of the Boston Celtics trading Rajon Rondo.

Bob Cousy, point guard emeritus of the Boston Celtics, agrees that his old team has its share of problems. He just doesn’t count Rajon Rondo among them.
Cousy believes Celtics GM Danny Ainge would be making a big mistake if he trades Rondo by the March 15 deadline.

I’m out of the loop, but boy, unless he’s a serial killer on the side I wouldn’t let this kid go,” Cousy said by phone. “I don’t know where you’d find a better point guard.

The 83-year-old Hall of Famer conceded that Rondo, a three-time All-Star, is a poor perimeter shooter who struggles from the foul line, but said, “He overcomes that because he’s such a strong penetrator and a good finisher. He sees the floor well, he’s a force on both backboards, and he’s an excellent defender for that position. I think he touches all the bases.

The Celtics can't control all the trade rumors, but winning sure helps.

Players almost universally confronted the recent rumors head-on after Friday's game. Instead of letting it fracture their foundation, everyone is rallying around one another, highlighted by Rivers' going to bat for Rondo on Thursday.

"I don't know where people are getting their information from, but it was big of Doc to come out with a statement," Rondo said Friday after Rivers told ESPNBoston.com on Thursday that his relationship with Rondo has never been better and the coach wants his point guard here this season. "People are still going to say that me and Doc have problems, even after that comment and statement he made, they are still going to say what they want to say. It's just part of life."

Yes, it's part of silly season. These previously staggering Celtics could have easily splintered amid the rumors. Instead, the noise might just be unifying them for a stretch run.

"We hear [the rumors], but it's out of our hands, man," Garnett said. "We try to get everybody that's in the talks, we try to make sure they stay focused, enjoy being here, enjoy the guys that are here. Management is going to do what they have to do, but, as players, we have to come together in this locker room, and understand we are players, we are in the same boat. We do support one another, and at the end of the day, we're C's. And everybody understands that."

By the time silly season passes, the rest of the league might not be laughing at a refocused Boston squad.

Let's think about it...

GTR - Mike P - Captain - Bass / Wilcox - KG

Bradley / Dooling - Jesus - Pavlovic - Bass / Wilcox - Steamboy

ça a de la gueule !

Green Street " Fast Break: Rondo, headband of brothers take down Nets
By Ben Rohrbach (http://greenstreet.weei.com) 03.02.12 at 9:57 pm ET

Rajon Rondo has rarely worn a headband since NBA commissioner David Stern issued a rule against wearing the logo upside down (a slight to Lakers legend Jerry West) at the start of last season, but the Celtics point guard sported his good luck charm backwards against the Nets in a 107-94 win over the Nets.

Perhaps Rondo needed a change of scenery after all the recent talk of him maybe getting … well, a change of scenery before the March 15 trade deadline (a notion C’s president Danny Ainge denied on Thursday).

Whatever the case, the three-time All-Star floor general submitted his second straight sublime performance, amassing 14 points, 13 assists, five steals and two rebounds just two nights after recording his third triple-double of the season.

Likewise, Kevin Garnett (20 points, 10 rebounds) — one of few Celtics regulars sans headband continued his productive stretch, dropping at least 20 points and 10 rebounds in two straight games for the first time in exactly one year. Paul Pierce (27 points) led five C’s scorers in double figures.

Meet the press: As the Celtics outscored the Nets 29-20 in each of the first two quarters, they showed a different look — albeit one most middle school teams run on a regular basis. Still, the C’s 2-1-2 and 2-2-1 fullcourt presses confused New Jersey to no end, resulting in five first-half Rondo steals and a 14-0 advantage in fast break points by the break.

--------------------------------------------------

Wojnarowski said Ainge might be asking teams what they would offer for Rondo in an attempt to determine the guard's trade value going forward, but that's different than actively "shopping" him.

"Boston's not doing that with Rondo," he said, noting that it's unlikely the guard will be moved this month.

"He's got a very good contract," Wojnarowski said. "The Celtics re-signed him on a favorable contract that they're going to use at some point -- you're hoping if you're Boston that you're going to use him at some point as part of a package to bring in a big star player. Whether that's somebody that's trying to force his way out of another market, whether it's a Chris Paul or Dwight Howard. That's the kind of player Boston has pursued in trades and has used Rondo for. That's what makes sense with him. He's there to be part of a bigger package for a superstar, for a franchise player.

They're not going to trade Rajon Rondo for spare parts or just to get rid of him. That's not going to happen."

Added Wojnarowski: "They're not going to trade him unless they get a superstar back. So, that probably tells you they're not going to trade him, because that kind of player is not available to them right now."

--------------------------------------------------

In typical Rajon Rondo fashion, he interrupted an interview with Jermaine O'Neal, who was talking about dealing with trade rumors today. O'Neal told Rondo to come through the door of the team's practice facility and speak for himself. And he did. Rondo, the subject of more trade rumors the past few days, said he is doing OK and was encouraged by the words of team president Danny Ainge and coach Doc Rivers, who both said he isn't on the trade block. "I'm doing all right," he said. "Like they say, it's part of the business. I'm happy just playing basketball. I'm happy with the guys they have surrounded me with, the coaching staff. Other than that, when I'm on the court I'm just focused on winning and just having fun while I'm doing it."

--------------------------------------------------

Jermaine O'Neal was taking jumpers at the team's practice facility today, wearing a protective splint on his left wrist. He visited a hand specialist Wednesday and described the session like visiting a fast food restaurant, where the doctor laid out options as if they were various value meals. O'Neal said that he's three options for treatment of his wrist: 1) a cortisone shot 2). minor surgery that may cost him a month or so or 2) more extensive surgery that would mean missing the rest of the season and perhaps end his career.
