So Wait & see

So, be patient.

Stay tuned...

Chris Wilcox Medically Cleared To Play; Celtics Interested
by Jeff Clark on Jul 2, 2012 2:13 PM PDT

Cleared for takeoff.

Chris Wilcox had been enjoying being on the receiving end of Rajon Rondo's alley-oops and providing the Celtics with some energy and athleticism before a heart condition was found that shut down his season. Now it sounds like he's ready to return to the court.

Wilcox Ready To Resume NBA Career " NBA.com | Hang Time Blog
Free-agent forward Chris Wilcox has been cleared for full-court contact, his agent said Monday, as the 29-year-old attempts to resume his career after undergoing aortic surgery last March. Wilcox had been playing well for the Boston Celtics as a reserve when the team’s doctors noticed what the team called a "significant" enlargement of his aorta. As a precaution, Wilcox was shut down for the season and operated on at the Cleveland Clinic March 29.

And going along with a common theme lately, yes, the Celtics are interested.

Scott Souza @scott_souza / 2 Jul 12
Some other tidbits from #Celtics this morning I: Danny Ainge said team would also like to have Chris Wilcox back.

Not sure what priority the Celtics would put on Wilcox or how much they'd be willing to offer him, but at the right price I'm not surprised that Boston would be interested.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How Much Is Stiemer Worth?
by Roy_Hobbs on Jul 2, 2012 6:22 AM PDT

Greg Stiemsma is a restricted free agent, as the Celtics have offered him a $1.05 million qualifying offer. The question is, how much above and beyond that $1.05 million do the Celtics go if another team signs Stiemer to an offer sheet? Is he worth $2 million per season? $3 million? How about... $8.33 million?
Probably not, but that's what Houston just offered a very similar player:

Restricted Access: Bad News For C's - Chris Forsberg - ESPN Boston

Player A: 3.1 ppg, 5.3 rpg, 1 bpg, 14.7 mpg, 50.6 FG%, 45.6 FT%, 66 games (2 starts)
Player B: 2.9 ppg, 3.2 rpg, 1.5 bpg, 13.9 mpg, 54.5 FG%, 70.7 FT%, 55 games (3 starts)

... Player A is Chicago Bulls second-year center Omer Asik. Player B is Celtics rookie center Greg Stiemsma. ...

And before you bark about how good Asik is defensively, hear us out. There's no denying Asik's talents on the defensive end. Of all NBA players with at least 250 defensive possessions against them last season, he ranked No. 1 allowing a mere 0.653 points per play, according to Synergy Sports data.

Stiemsma? He ranked No. 7 at 0.711 points per play and often was the first big off the bench to spell Kevin Garnett, so it's not like his numbers were overly inflated by sharing court time with Boston's defensive anchor...

There's at least a strong possibility that Stiemsma is going to be offered more than his QO. Matching a contract offer -- even a reasonable one -- can be tricky under the cap rules, though.

Stiemsma is a "non-Bird" free agent. Basically, that means that we can only go over the cap to sign him for his qualifying offer this season. If we want to pay him more, we have to use another exception -- the MLE or the bi-annual exception (BAE). Let's say another team offers him the modest sum of $2 million in the first year of his deal. Unfortunately, we can't match that without using our MLE, meaning that rather than being able to offer $5 million to a guy like Jason Terry, we'd only be able to offer $3 million. That's a serious loss of flexibility.

Additionally, our budget is constrained by the $74 million hard cap for teams that want to use the full MLE. Signing Stiemer to an amount greater than his QO jeopardizes our ability to stay within that restriction, which would result in the loss of the BAE and would confine us to the "taxpayer's MLE" of $3 million. Again, that's a loss of flexibility (especially if 2/3 of that "taxpayer's MLE" is spent on Stiemer).

So, faced with those options, what do you do? To me, I wouldn't feel comfortable going over the $1.05 million qualifying offer, and I definitely wouldn't offer more than the bi-annual exception ($1.957 million). While Stiemsma is a good story and a decent project as a backup center, I think his production can be almost matched by a number of veteran minimum type centers. I just don't think we can sacrifice our flexibility to bring in free agent upgrades for a guy with fairly minimal production.

After the draft, there were a lot of comparisons between Melo and Kendrick Perkins (defensive center, limited offensive game) and it sounds like KG wants to hit the ground running with him before training camp. Garnett has already contacted the seven-foot Syracuse Orangeman. The Celtics' defense is a complex rotation of switches where you're expected to guard your man and keep tabs on the ball handler simultaneously. Many a big man have come to Boston (Mikki Moore, Patrick O'Bryant) and not been so receptive to KG's tutelage, but it sounds like Melo is saying all the right things right now: "I'm a very coach-able guy. Just tell me how to do it and I will do it." My only surprise is that Melo didn't go with #43 instead of Joseph.

Rumor: Celtics Want Both Ray Allen and Jason Terry
by Jeff Clark on Jul 2, 2012 3:20 AM PDT

It was assumed (by me at least, and probably by most) that the Celtics were looking into Jason Terry as a replacement for Ray Allen. Well, the Celtics are increasingly confident that they can retain the services of Mr. Allen and are still interested in adding The Jet as well.

Doc Rivers: Celtics want to keep core together; hope to re-sign Ray Allen - Yahoo! Sports
The Celtics have tried to solidify the shooting guard position by pursuing Dallas Mavericks free agent Jason Terry in addition to Allen, and Rivers said he can envision the team signing both. Celtics president Danny Ainge spoke to Terry on Sunday. Terry also is receiving interest from the Memphis Grizzlies, the Los Angeles Clippers, Suns and Mavericks. "We've given our pitch," Rivers said. "We're definitely in the picture and we have a lot of interest."

That would be something to behold. You have to like the idea of adding the perennial 6th man of the year to provide that much talked about scoring to our bench.

Rumor: Celtics Are "Close" To Signing Jeff Green
by Jeff Clark on Jul 2, 2012 2:59 AM PDT

This is what Jeff Green looks like on the court in case you have forgotten.

To the surprise of no one, Jeff Green sounds like he's going to be a member of the Boston Celtics this year.

Celtics hopeful on Allen, Green " NBA.com | Hang Time Blog
Meanwhile, the Celtics believe they're "close," as one source put it, to reaching agreement on a new deal with Green, who missed all of last season after undergoing open-heart surgery in December to repair an aortic aneurysm. The team had initially reached agreement with Green on a one-year deal before the season began, but once his condition was detected during a preseason physical the team rescinded the contract, making him an unrestricted free agent.

Raptors go all-in for Steve Nash, Celtics eye Jeff Green, more free-agent news - Sam Amick - SI.com
But a source close to 25-year-old forward Jeff Green said the odds of him also returning to Beantown as well are high, thanks in large part to his affinity for coach Doc Rivers and the Celtics' stance that he's an important part of their future going forward.

Green struggled in his first half year with the Celtics, but there were a lot of factors at play there, including learning a new system on the fly after the mid-season trade. He showed flashes of potential in particular in transition with Rondo.

Technically Green can play either of the forward spots, and that versatility could be useful, but he seems to be a better fit at the 3. A lot of time was spent analyzing his defense and efficiency and not very favorably, but the hope is that he would be much more comfortable in the system with some time to learn it.

The Celtics would have been better off with Green proving himself on the one year deal he signed last year but perhaps they can work out a similar short term make-good deal now.

Pour finir, comme dirait Jeff Clark : "did I mentioned he's a 7 footer ?"

Rondo-KG is back... Miam ! comme dirait qqun

Les prochaines étapes pour Danny Ainge...

We’ve got KG, Pierce, Rondo, Bradley and Johnson under contract for about $41 million.
Now let’s start adding players.

Jeff Green
He could be getting between $7 and $9 million. He’s virtually guaranteed to come back. Payroll: $48-50 million. 6 players under contract.

Brandon Bass
Let’s pretend he gets $6.5 million since that’s around what Glen Davis makes. Even if the Celtics sign-and-trade him, they’ll get $6.5 million back in salary… so this all works out numbers-wise. Payroll: $54.5-56.5 million. 7 players under contract.

Our two draft picks, Jared Sullinger and Fab Melo.
They will make a combined $3 million, guaranteed.

Payroll: $57.5-59.5 million. 9 players under contract.

Now What? Adding Pieces After KG's Deal
by Jeff Clark on Jun 30, 2012 11:49 AM PDT

Next !

Huge props to John of Red's Army who does a phenomenal job of breaking down the financial impacts and potential next moves the Celtics could make.
Please go read the whole thing but I'll give a brief overview for commenting purposes.

Essentially, Garnett signing for about $10M (with escalators) is a great first step.
The next step is signing our own key free agents. That means Jeff Green and Brandon Bass.
Then, after signing our 2 first round draft picks, we would be over the salary cap but still under the luxury tax line of $70M.

The great thing about that is that we would be able to use both the Mid Level Exception and the Bi Annual Exception to sign other free agents.

Details here...

KG is coming back. So what does that mean? | Red's Army - The Voice of Boston Celtics Fans
If the Celtics, after re-signing, sign-and-trades, and renouncing, have a payroll of $67 million dollars, they CANNOT use the entire non-taxpayer mid-level because the resulting $5 million will bring them above the luxury tax. The Celtics would then use the TAXPAYER mid-level, which would give the Celtics slightly more than $3 million to give to a player, or split among multiple players, for contracts up to three years.

The downside is that signing Ray Allen would be difficult and expensive down the line, but we've been preparing for that for months now. An interesting twist on this is that it might be better for us that KG signed for $10M than it would have been if he had signed for the league minimum because we wouldn't have been able to spend as much on our own free agents to get over the cap.

So we'd be looking at a starting lineup of Rondo, Bradley, Pierce, Bass, and Garnett with a bench of Jeff Green, free agent X ($5M), free agent Y ($3M), Sullinger, JaJuan Johnson, and E'Tuwan Moore. Not sure, but I'd think Stiemsma fits in there somewhere as well (not to mention Melo, Joseph, and another min level guy). Note: hopefully one of these TBD slots is a backup point guard.

Is that a title contending team? I guess it depends a great deal on the free agents, but it isn't a bad start.

Obviously there are dozens of variations with sign and trade options but this is starting to sound like the most likely outcome. And if it is, that's not a bad thing in my opinion.

The Celtics, with 10 players under contract, will be at, very likely, about $60 million.

- That gives them about $10 million in wiggle room to fill between 2 and 5 slots.
- They will have a $5 million mid-level to pursue a free agent (or split among multiple free agents).
- They will have a $2 million bi-annual to pursue a free agent (or split among multiple free agents).
- These exceptions cannot be combined to give one player $7 million

And they will have veteran minimum contracts, which they are free to use on as many players as they want.
